Extension of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana: It looks like government is planning to expand the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana [PMAY] 2.0. Launched with the intention of providing housing to all, this housing scheme aims to build 1 crore additional houses in urban areas in the next 5 years. The special thing is that these houses will be built for the middle and lower-middle class.

the Ministry of Labor has written a letter to all the states asking them to bring migrant laborers, building construction workers, beedi workers, cine workers, non-coal mine workers, contract workers and workers of other unorganized sectors under the housing scheme.

According to the release, ‘This decision has been taken after the Union Cabinet approved the extension of the implementation of PMAY for an additional five years from FY 2024-25 and 2028-29, with the aim of providing 2 crore additional houses to the eligible beneficiaries. This initiative recognizes the need for houses of economically weaker workers.’

The Ministry of Labor has emphasized that these workers come from the disadvantaged section of the society and hence providing houses to these people under PMAY is not only social justice but it’s also a necessary step towards improving their standard of living.
