Using needles to combat wrinkles, scars, or stretch marks? That is the promise of microneedling, a new beauty treatment that even stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Bar Rafaeli swear by.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling (also known as mesotherapy) is the ultimate beauty treatment for skin problems and is used to treat wrinkles, scars, pigment spots, and even stretch marks. The uppermost layer of facial skin, the epidermis, is treated with a derma roller or a micro-needling pen fitted with fine needles. The skin is injured, so to speak, in order to stimulate new growth.

This has a particularly effective anti-aging effect as it stimulates the formation of new collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin, making the skin particularly receptive to this condition. In this way, additional active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid , antioxidants, and vitamins can be introduced into the skin, which directly affects the deeper layers of the skin. The treatment is, therefore, a possible alternative for anyone who has ever considered a facelift or Botox treatment. The treatment is also popular among women with thin, sparse hair, as when applied to the scalp, it promotes blood circulation and stimulates hair growth.

Possible areas of application of micro needling at a glance:

  • As an anti-aging treatment against wrinkles or sagging connective tissue
  • Scars (including acne scars, burn scars, surgical scars)
  • Stretch marks , stretch marks
  • Scalp problems
  • Hair loss
  • pale facial skin, large pores
  • Pigment disorders
  • Crow’s feet

Micro needling is a minimally invasive procedure that is ideally carried out by an expert. However, there are now also dermarollers with shorter needle lengths for home use.

Who is microneedling not suitable for?

Anyone who suffers from acute acne,  pimples , herpes or rosacea or has very sensitive skin should avoid microneedling. Treatment with the dermaroller can, for example, spread bacteria responsible for acne all over the face and thus make the condition even worse.

When will you see the results?

The positive effects of microneedling are often only noticeable after a few weeks to six months, often only after several treatments.

For acne scars, an average of about ten sessions are recommended, for wrinkles and as an anti-aging agent, about six treatments at two-week intervals – but the recommendations naturally vary from case to case or from skin to skin and are subject to the expertise of a dermatologist.
