Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t wear makeup if you have acne or blemish-prone skin. The right makeup applied well, can help you cover up imperfections and give you the confidence you need in life. Additionally, some people find that once they have applied makeup, they touch their faceless because they don’t want to ruin their makeup. This is potentially good news for those who suffer from acne since there is nothing worse for your skin than popping pimples.

This article gives you advice on what to look for, and what to avoid, when choosing makeup, and we also give you some tips on how to apply makeup on blemish-prone skin so you can hide your pimples and look and feel gorgeous.

What makeup products can I use if I have acne?

Foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick… the list goes on. Just because you have acne or blemish-prone skin shouldn’t stop you from using these types of makeup. But there are things you should look for, and things you should avoid, if you’re prone to breakouts:

Choose makeup that has been tried, tested and proven to be compatible with acne-prone skin.
  1. Quality Matters
Use high-quality products. Price isn’t always a good indicator of quality, but “less is more” tends to be a good indicator of quality when it comes to makeup for acne-prone skin. Look for products that are tried and tested and free of too many additives.
  2. Non-comedogenic
A non-comedogenic product is one that has been specifically formulated not to clog pores (because blocked pores can cause blemishes and acne). Make sure you choose products that are labelled “non-comedogenic” (or have a similar claim) on the packaging. They are best suited to your skin and are safe to use even if you are undergoing medical treatment for acne. 3. Proven Active Ingredients
Ideally the products you choose should contain active ingredients that have been proven to improve blemish-prone skin. The evidence you are looking for is clinical and/or dermatological research, and active ingredients that can have a positive effect on blemishes include Salicylic Acid which opens up pimples and has an anti-bacterial effect.

The right routine is everything

Phase 1: Cleaning

Cleanse your skin thoroughly before applying foundation Cleansing is the first important step in treating pimple-prone skin. Dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells can clog pores and encourage new impurities, so applying makeup on top of them will only make things worse.

Cleanse your face thoroughly, yet gently, using products that have been specially formulated for blemish-prone skin, such as Eucerin DermoPurifyer Oil Control Cleansing Gel  and  Eucerin DermoPurifyer Oil Control Micellar Water . Check out the ideal skincare products and skincare routine for blemish-prone skin  for tips on how to best cleanse your skin.

Phase 2: Hydration

Apply a mattifying moisturizer specifically formulated for blemish-prone skin.

Choose a moisturizer that soothes acne-prone skin and acts as a perfect base for foundation. Since your skin is oily, you will want to choose a product with a mattifying effect − one that prevents the skin from becoming shiny. You could try  Eucerin DermoPurifyer Oil Control Mattifying Fluid which is an ideal base for foundation.

If you like, you can apply a primer after your moisturizer (do not use a primer in place of your moisturizer) but make sure you choose one that is non-comedogenic.

Let your moisturizer and primer absorb for a few minutes before applying your foundation.

If you are undergoing topical medical treatment for acne, apply the appropriate cream or ointment before your moisturizer and allow your skin time to absorb it.  Eucerin DermoPurifyer Oil Control Soothing Treatment has been specifically formulated as a moisturizer to be used during medical acne treatment so you may prefer to use it as a make-up base instead of using  Eucerin DermoPurifyer Oil Control Mattifying Treatment until after your medical treatment.
