Netflix calls One Hundred Years of Solitude (2024) , or One Hundred Years of Solitude in English, “one of the most ambitious audiovisual projects in Latin American history.” Well, if that doesn’t get you excited. With the help of the first poster, the streaming service has just revealed the release date.

On a journey to happiness

Cousin and niece Jose Arcadio Buendía and Ursula Iguaran are married against their parents wishes and leave their village behind to embark on a long journey in search of a new home. Accompanied by friends and adventurers, their journey culminates in the foundation of a utopian city on the banks of a river of prehistoric stones that they name Macondo.

Several generations of the Buendía family will determine the future of this mythical city, tormented by madness, impossible loves, a bloody and absurd war and the fear of a terrible curse that condemns them without hope to a hundred years of solitude.

Timeless Tale

One Hundred Years of Solitude, published in 1967, is considered a masterpiece of contemporary literature. The plot follows the Buendía family in Macondo, a fictitious town marked by love, sorrow, and mystical elements. Over seven generations, the Buendías face loneliness, lunacy, and relationship challenges, while dealing with their history

The series is directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora, who want to preserve Márquez’s work while modernising it for modern audiences. García López acknowledges the immense burden of translating a renowned book, noting, “It has been an honour and huge challenge to work on a project as complex and that carries as much responsibility as One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Genuine Adaptation

Authenticity is crucial to this adaptation. The series is shot in Colombia with a largely Colombian cast to retain cultural and emotional subtleties (EW.com, Cinema Express). The cast features Claudio Cataño (Colonel Aureliano Buendía), Susana Morales (Úrsula Iguarán), and Marco González (José Arcadio Buendía). This choice aligns with García Márquez’s objective for accurate representation of his work, avoiding prior misrepresentations of Latin American tales.

Consent of the family

The 16-episode series is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez. The series is directed by Laura Mora and Alex García López and was shot in Colombia with the approval of the writing family. The leading roles are played by Claudio Cataño, Jerónimo Barón, Marco González, Leonardo Soto, Susana Morales and Ella Becerra.
