Good news for Indian citizens, those without a smartphone can now access UPI payments without an internet connection. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has simplified digital payments through UPI 123Pay, allowing both feature phone and smartphone users to make seamless UPI payments offline. This new feature makes digital transactions even more accessible across all mobile devices.
The use of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has increased rapidly, with most people now preferring UPI for payments. It’s not only secure but also enables users to transfer money between accounts within seconds, reducing the need for cash and saving time. Additionally, the central government is actively promoting UPI payments, extending this facility beyond India to countries like the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Recently, an important update related to UPI payments has been announced.
UPI Payments Now Possible Without Internet
For those without a smartphone, UPI payments can now be made even offline. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced UPI 123Pay, simplifying digital payments for both feature phone and smartphone users. With UPI 123Pay, users can now make transactions up to ₹10,000 without needing an internet connection. This feature broadens access to digital payments, especially for those with limited internet access, making cashless transactions even more convenient and inclusive.
Here are 4 ways to make UPI payments without the Internet:
Voice Payments via IVR
For users who don’t have a smartphone, UPI 123Pay offers a voice-based payment option through Interactive Voice Response (IVR). Simply dial a designated IVR number provided by your bank or payment provider. After connecting, the IVR system will guide you with options for completing the transaction. You can enter the recipient’s details, and amount, and confirm the transaction securely using your keypad. This method is simple and allows users to make payments even without a smartphone or internet connection.
Proximity Sound-Based Payments
In this method, payments can be made through a sound-based technology that works offline. A special tone or “sound wave” is emitted from a nearby Point-of-Sale Device (POD) that your phone can recognize. When you place your phone close to the device, the payment details are exchanged through sound waves. You confirm the payment by authorizing it on your phone, which requires only basic phone capabilities. This innovative method makes payments quick and accessible, without the need for internet or complex hardware.
Missed Call Payments
Another convenient offline payment option for UPI is through a missed call system. To initiate a payment, dial a specific number associated with the recipient or merchant. After a few seconds, you’ll receive a callback. In this return call, you’ll be prompted to confirm the amount and enter your UPI PIN to authorize the transaction. This method ensures a secure, offline payment process for those who prefer phone-based transactions.
UPI App for Feature Phones
UPI 123Pay also includes a UPI app designed specifically for feature phones. Once you have the app installed, you can initiate and complete UPI payments directly from your feature phone. This app provides basic options similar to those on a smartphone UPI app, allowing you to enter payment details, confirm the amount, and complete the transaction by entering your UPI PIN. With this app, feature phone users can experience the convenience of digital payments without needing a smartphone.
