The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has deactivated 11.5 crore PAN cards that were not linked to Aadhaar. According to a report by ‘The Hindu’, this information was provided by the CBDT in response to an RTI query. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar was 30th June. People whose PAN cards were issued before 1st July 2017 were required to link them with Aadhaar. PAN cards issued after 1st July 2017 are automatically linked with Aadhaar.

How Many PAN Card Holders Are There?

According to a report, there are 70.24 crore PAN holders in India. Out of these, 57.25 crore PAN cards are linked to Aadhaar. However, 11.5 crore PAN cards have been deactivated for failing to link with Aadhaar.

If your PAN card is deactivated, you can reactivate it by paying a fine of Rs 1000. Keep in mind, if your PAN card is deactivated, you may face difficulties with financial transactions exceeding Rs 50,000. Additionally, you may encounter problems while filing your Income Tax Returns (ITR).

How to Check Whether Your PAN Card is Active or Not?

You can easily check the status of your PAN card online by following these simple steps:

  • Visit the Income Tax website.
  • Click on ‘Verify Your PAN’.
  • Enter your PAN number, name, date of birth, and mobile number.
  • Click on ‘Continue’.
  • The status of your PAN card will appear on the screen.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online

  1. Visit Official Website: Go to NSDL (https://www.tin-nsdl.com/) or UTIITSL (https://www.utiitsl.com/).
  2. Select Application Form: Choose Form 49A for Indian citizens or Form 49AA for foreigners.
  3. Fill in Details: Provide personal details like name, date of birth, and address.
  4. Upload Documents: Submit proof of identity, address, and date of birth (e.g., Aadhaar, passport).
  5. Pay Application Fee: The fee is ₹107 (for Indian applicants) or ₹989 (for foreign applicants).
  6. Submit and Acknowledge: Submit the form and note the acknowledgement number.
  7. Receive PAN Card: The card will be mailed or you can download the e-PAN.
