Cooking in the kitchens of people living in Mumbai and its surrounding areas has become a little more expensive since Friday. Mahanagar Gas Limited, the company that supplies PNG (piped natural gas) to homes in the city, has increased the price of PNG by ₹2 per kg from November 22. With the new rate, the price of one kg of PNG has now risen to ₹77. The price hike comes just a few days after the elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand concluded. The purpose of this increase is to address the rising costs.

Impact of GAIL Supply Cut

On November 16, city gas companies, including MGL, Indraprastha Gas Limited, and Adani Total Gas Limited, faced a supply cut in their domestic gas allocation from GAIL (India) Limited, ranging from 13% to 20%. At 2:22 pm, the shares of Mahanagar Gas Limited were trading 3.57% higher at ₹1,165.50 per share.

According to Media reports, the central government also cut MGL’s domestic APM gas allocation in October. CGD players reacted by stating that the decision would impact profits.

Impact of November Cut

The latest cut in gas allocation in November increases dependence on expensive options like spot or imported LNG. This puts pressure on profits and could lead to potential price hikes.

What is PNG?

PNG (Piped Natural Gas) is a form of natural gas distributed directly to residential, commercial, and industrial consumers through underground pipelines. It is a clean-burning fuel, primarily composed of methane, and is considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuels.
