As per reports, hackers have carried out this scam at multiple SBI ATMs in Thiruvananthapuram.
What the matter is?
Two people exploited a technical issue in the Indian State Bank’s ATM machine to steal 2.52 lakh rupees. This scam involves using stolen debit cards without detection. Reports indicate that scammers start by taking people’s debit cards. They proceed to take out money by taking advantage of the ATM machine’s technical error. Usually, when funds are removed from a account, the user is sent a text notification, but with this issue, neither money is withdrawn nor are messages sent to the users. Nevertheless, cash vanishes from the ATM machine.
Hackers use the same method as regular users
Money is taken out from an ATM machine of SBI or any bank by inserting the card and entering the PIN. Hackers use the same method as regular users when taking out money from an ATM, but they insert a note that tricks the machine into believing no funds were withdrawn, so the note is left in the machine.
Consequently, no funds are taken from anyone’s account, however cash vanishes from the ATM machine. The bank detected a technical issue after noticing funds were taken out of the ATM but not debited from any account. Following that, bank staff reviewed the ATM machine’s CCTV footage and discovered that fraudsters had cunningly taken advantage of the timed-out technical problem to deceive the bank.
After multiple ATMs were fraudulently accessed, two people were identified as possible suspects. It was later disclosed that they were utilizing stolen ATM cards to conduct these actions.
