PM Kisan Samman Yojana: Amid the ongoing farmers’ agitation, the Parliamentary Committee has suggested that the government increase the amount given to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana from ₹6,000 per annum to ₹12,000 per annum. The Standing Committee, headed by Charanjit Singh Channi, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, has submitted its recommendations to the government.
Standing Committee’s Proposal
On Tuesday, 17 December 2024, Charanjit Singh Channi presented the first Demand for Grants of the 18th Lok Sabha for the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in the Lok Sabha.
Doubling the PM Kisan Limit
In this report, the Parliamentary Standing Committee associated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare recommended doubling the financial assistance provided under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. The report specifically suggests that the current limit of ₹6,000 provided annually to farmers under the scheme should be increased to ₹12,000 to better support their needs.
Farmers to Get a Budget Gift!
This is not the first time that the government has been asked to increase the assistance given to farmers under PM Kisan Nidhi. For several years, farmer representatives have demanded this during the Finance Minister’s pre-budget meetings. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the 2025-26 budget on February 1, 2025. With the recent recommendation from the Parliamentary Committee, there is speculation that an increase in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi limit may be announced in the budget.
₹3.45 Lakh Crore Given Under PM Kisan Yojana
Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, an increase in the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi amount was expected, but it did not happen. In the budget presented on February 1, 2019, before the 2019 elections, then Finance Minister Piyush Goyal introduced the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana. Under this scheme, small and medium farmers get ₹6,000 annually in three instalments, directly transferred to their bank accounts. So far, ₹3.45 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers in 18 instalments.
