Shubman Gill has been unable to make a significant impact in the Test matches he has played outside of Asia. Particularly in the SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), his batting record is underwhelming. Surprisingly, even fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has managed to score nearly the same number of runs as Gill in these conditions.
Gill is currently in Australia with Team India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During the third Test of the series, the youngster scored 31 and 28 runs in Adelaide after missing the first match in Perth. In the first innings of the Test at Gabba, however, he was dismissed for just 1 run.
Gill vs. Bhuvneshwar: A Surprising Comparison
When comparing Gill’s batting record in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) Tests to that of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the numbers are strikingly similar. While Gill is a top-order batter, Bhuvneshwar is a fast bowler who contributes occasionally with the bat. Both players, however, have yet to play Test matches in New Zealand. The unexpected similarity between their records highlights Gill’s ongoing struggles in foreign conditions.
