Ahead of 2025, BJP led BJP government made big decision. On Friday, govt announced an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of copra (coconut kernel) by Rs 422 to Rs 12,100 per quintal for the 2025 season with a budget outlay of Rs 855 crore. The decision to increase the MSP of copra was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that the MSP of ‘milling copra’ for the year 2025 has been increased by Rs 422 to Rs 11,582 per quintal, while the MSP of ‘ball copra’ has been increased by Rs 100 to Rs 12,100 per quintal. The support price fixed on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) is for fair and average quality of milling and ball copra varieties.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said the MSP has been fixed at 50 per cent more than the cost of production. The total financial burden will be Rs 855 crore. National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) will be the central nodal agencies for procurement of copra and unhushed coconut under the Price Support Scheme (statement arnataka has the highest share of copra production in the country at 32.7 per cent, followed by Tamil Nadu at 25.7 per cent, Kerala at 25.4 per cent and Andhra Pradesh at 7.7 per cent. Apart from this, copra is also produced in Maharashtra. Coconut is also cultivated on a small scale in West Bengal, Odisha, Daman-Diu and Gujarat.
As per statement issued by the govt, “Higher MSP will not only ensure better remuneration to coconut growers but will also encourage farmers to increase production of copra to meet the growing demand of coconut produce domestically and internationally.”
