Old Note Sell: How much can you typically expect to receive for a hundred rupee note? This may seem like an unusual question, but a hundred rupee Indian currency note recently sold for an astonishing Rs 56,49,650 at an auction in London. This exceptional banknote, issued by the Reserve Bank of India in 1950 with the serial number HA 078400, is far from ordinary. Known as ‘Haj notes’, these special currency notes were created for pilgrims traveling to Gulf countries for the Hajj pilgrimage, aiming to curb illegal gold purchases with standard Indian currency.

Features of the note

The banknote features the serial number ‘HA’ and is distinct in color from other Indian currency notes of that era. It was legally accepted in Gulf nations that recognized the Indian rupee, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. During this time, other Gulf countries began to issue their own currencies as well. The issuance of Hajj currency in India ceased in 1970, and today, these notes hold significant value among collectors, contributing to the Hajj note’s high market price.

In a separate auction in London, two two-rupee notes fetched impressive sums as well, with one selling for Rs 6.90 lakh and the other for Rs 5.80 lakh. These notes were issued on May 25, 1918, at the conclusion of the First World War and originated from the ship ‘SS Shirala’, which was sunk by German torpedoes on July 2, 1918. Their value has appreciated significantly due to their preservation; they were stored in watertight bags, preventing deterioration despite being submerged for over a century.

Due to this factor, they remained untouched by seawater. Additionally, the superior quality of the paper utilized in the minting of these coins contributed to their preservation. Coins from the early 20th century are considered rare, which has led to increased interest and purchases from collectors and historians.
