HMPV: The new virus currently circulating in China has now been detected in India, raising significant concerns as the first case has emerged in the southern region. The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been identified in Karnataka, which borders the Telugu states. An 8-month-old infant in Bengaluru, the capital and IT hub of the state, has contracted the virus and is receiving treatment at a private hospital.

Fever persisted despite medical intervention

Recently, the child was brought to the hospital by family members due to a high fever. When the fever persisted despite medical intervention, doctors grew concerned and ordered further tests, which confirmed the presence of HMPV. This marks the first reported case in India.

Know what medical experts have said abou the virus

Medical professionals indicate that the HMPV virus tends to spread more during the winter months, a time when colds are prevalent due to the colder weather. However, the symptoms associated with HMPV can mimic those of common colds, making diagnosis challenging. Symptoms include cough, sneezing, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and sore throat, with the virus potentially leading to severe respiratory issues. Additional symptoms such as fever and skin rashes may also occur.

Potentially damaging the lungs and leading to fatal outcomes

HMPV can result in serious respiratory complications for some individuals, potentially damaging the lungs and leading to fatal outcomes. It can also trigger respiratory infections like pneumonia and asthma. The virus is easily transmitted through the air, allowing it to spread rapidly and infect more individuals before symptoms manifest.
