In Lucknow, starting January 26, 2025, petrol will only be dispensed to two-wheeler riders and their passengers who are wearing helmets. This directive, issued by District Magistrate Surya Pal Gangwar under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aims to mitigate road accidents.

Signs stating ‘No helmet, no petrol’

Petrol station operators are required to display signs stating ‘No helmet, no petrol.’ Additionally, they must ensure that their CCTV systems are operational to facilitate monitoring and prevent disputes. This initiative comes in response to the rising number of road accidents in the area.

Individuals riding two-wheelers without helmets will be denied fuel

From the specified date, individuals riding two-wheelers without helmets will be denied fuel. The District Magistrate has mandated that all petrol station owners comply with this regulation, which is based on instructions from the Uttar Pradesh Transport Commissioner dated January 8. Within five days, petrol stations must install the ‘No helmet, no fuel’ signage. Compliance is mandatory for both the driver and the passenger, with the requirement to wear helmets that meet BIS standards.

Compulsory for both the rider and the pillion to wear helmets

Non-compliance will result in penalties under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. According to Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rule 201 of the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules, it is compulsory for both the rider and the pillion to wear helmets. Violations will be subject to legal action under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Furthermore, petrol station owners are obligated to maintain their CCTV cameras in good working order to ensure proper monitoring of helmet compliance and to avoid any potential conflicts.
