New Delhi: Suzuki’s iconic Kei car, the Alto, is set to enter its 10th generation in 2026, bringing significant improvements in weight reduction, fuel efficiency, and overall performance. As a long-standing favorite in Japan’s small car segment since 1979, the Alto continues to evolve with cutting-edge technology and a refined design.
Major Weight Reduction Program
The upcoming Alto will undergo a major weight-saving initiative, reducing its kerb weight by approximately 100 kg compared to the current 9th-generation model. The present Alto weighs between 680 kg to 760 kg, depending on the variant. However, the next-generation model is expected to range between 580 kg and 660 kg, bringing it closer to the lightness of earlier generations.
Suzuki has a history of keeping the Alto lightweight. The first-generation model (1979) weighed between 530 kg and 570 kg, while the second generation (1984) ranged from 540 kg to 630 kg. However, later generations gradually became heavier, with the 6th-gen model (2004) reaching up to 810 kg.
By adopting an improved version of Suzuki’s Heartect platform, the 10th-gen Alto will benefit from a stronger yet lighter structure. Ultra-high-strength steel and lightweight components in the engine, suspension, transmission, and wheels will contribute to this significant weight reduction.
Performance and Fuel Efficiency Boost
The lighter body will enhance the power-to-weight ratio, resulting in improved acceleration and efficiency. Suzuki is also expected to introduce advancements in engine technology to achieve better mileage and lower emissions.
The current 9th-generation Alto offers both petrol and mild-hybrid powertrain options:
658cc Naturally Aspirated Petrol Engine
Power: 46 PS
Torque: 58 Nm
Transmission: CVT
657cc Mild-Hybrid Powertrain with Integrated Starter Generator (ISG)
Power: 49 PS
Torque: 58 Nm
Transmission: CVT
Fuel Efficiency: 27.7 km/l (2WD variant)
For the 10th-gen Alto, Suzuki is expected to introduce a 48V Super Ene Charge system, potentially increasing fuel efficiency to over 30 km/l, making it one of the most economical cars in the Kei segment.
Consumer Benefits: More Savings, Less Emissions
The significant weight reduction and improved technology will benefit consumers in multiple ways:
Better Fuel Economy: Lower fuel consumption means reduced running costs.
Enhanced Performance: A lighter body improves acceleration and driving dynamics.
Eco-Friendliness: Lower emissions contribute to a reduced carbon footprint.
Lower Maintenance Costs: Lightweight materials and an efficient powertrain will improve longevity and reduce wear and tear.
With these advancements, the 10th-generation Suzuki Alto is set to continue its legacy as a top choice for urban mobility, combining affordability, efficiency, and a smart, lightweight design. Suzuki is expected to unveil more details closer to the car’s launch in 2026.
