Volkswagen Polo has been one of the most iconic and favorite hatchbacks in the Indian car market. It was discontinued from India in 2022, but now there are reports that Volkswagen Polo may re-enter India as part of the brand revival strategy. This time the Polo may not come as a traditional hatchback, but in a new SUV or Crossover avatar. Although the company has not yet officially confirmed it, the possibility of its re-launch is very high.

Volkswagen Polo
The Volkswagen Polo has been a legendary hatchback in India. Its sensuous styling, solid build quality and fine performance made it a favorite among Indian buyers. Though it never got any significant design changes in India, it was always a preferred choice of car enthusiasts. Even now, the Polo is India’s hatchback version of the Virtus, though both vehicles are based on varying platforms.
New avatar of Polo
Ashish Gupta mentioned that the company is thinking of various possibilities to revive the Polo brand. One of the possibilities is also a sub-4m SUV, which can be developed on a platform such as Skoda Kylaq. This possibility can be favorable for Volkswagen since it can position the company as a new entrant in the entry-level segment in India, which can bring volume as well as profitability.
Polo brand recall
The recall of the Polo brand is still very high in India. The vehicle is extremely popular not just for new buyers but also in the used segment. Even though it was discontinued in 2022, the resale value of the Polo has appreciated by as much as 30%. Even now, a VW Polo owner can sell his vehicle at the same price at which he purchased it a few years back. Volkswagen’s used car business has also increased significantly thanks to the Polo. From only 3,000 units in 2019, this business will touch 33,000 units by 2024.

Golf GTI and Tiguan R Line
Volkswagen is also going to launch the Golf GTI and Tiguan R Line in India shortly. These vehicles will be retailed through selected dealerships, so that the customers have the best ownership experience. Yet, Polo remains the most critical car for Volkswagen in the mass market space, particularly when it comes to after-sales. Out of 7 lakh VW cars sold in India until date, 4 lakh units are Polo alone, which is around 60% of the company’s volume.
