Food delivery aggregator Zomato faced a setback on Thursday when the GST department in Thane claimed Rs 803.4 crore, which includes interest and penalties. Zomato provided this information in a regulatory submission. As per PTI news, an order has been issued concerning the failure to pay GST, including interest and penalty on delivery fees.

Zomato has reacted to this tax request

As reported in the media reoorts, Zomato has reacted to this tax request by stating that it will appeal on the suitable platform, confident that its case is robust. Zomato announced that it has received an order dated December 12, 2024. Issued by the Joint Commissioner of CGST and Central Excise, Thane Commissionerate, Maharashtra for the timeframe from 29 October 2019 to 31 March 2022, affirming the GST demand of Rs 401,70,14,706 along with corresponding interest and penalty of Rs 401,70,14,706.

The firm stated that they are confident in their solid case regarding the merits, bolstered by the views of company’s external legal and tax consultants. The firm intends to submit an appeal against the decision to the relevant authority.

Last month, Zomato secured Rs 8,500 crore by offering equity shares to qualified institutional investors to achieve its growth goal. Zomato Limited has announced a consolidated net profit of Rs 176 crore for the quarter from July to September.

The consolidated operating revenue of the company was Rs 4,799 crore for the period analyzed. Its overall spending in this timeframe amounted to Rs 4,783 crore, compared to Rs 3,039 crore during the corresponding period last year. Zomato stated that its outcomes for the September quarter and the first half cannot be compared with results from other quarters and half-year periods. In August, it purchased Orbgen Technologies Private Limited (OTPL) and Westland Entertainment Private Limited (WEPL) from One97 Communications Limited (Paytm).
