Everyone is now talking about RBI and it’s new governer. The appointment of Sanjay Malhotra as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been approved by the Union Cabinet. Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and currently Revenue Secretary, will assume his charge on 11 December 2024. The RBI governor’s term is usually three years. Sanjay Malhotra will replace Shaktikanta Das in this role, whose term ends on 10 December 2024.

 

Rs 450 crore mansion

 

During a discussion with YouTuber Raj Shamani on the Figuring Out podcast, former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan stated that he once calculated and discovered that selling their house would yield Rs 450 crore. Currently, the bungalow provided to the RBI governor in the Malabar Hill area of Mumbai is quite spacious and opulent. This bungalow has various types of amenities.

 

This bungalow offers various types of facilities. In the same podcast, Raghuram Rajan, who served as RBI governor from September 2013 to September 2016, mentioned that at that time, the annual salary of the governor was merely Rs 4 lakh.

 

What was Shaktikanta Das’s salary?

 

As per an RTI inquiry, the former Governor Shaktikanta Das had a monthly salary of Rs 2.5 lakh. Urjit Patel, the previous Governor of RBI before Shaktikanta Das, received the same salary as well. Simultaneously, discussing the compensation of other senior officials in RBI, the monthly salary of the deputy governor stands at Rs 2.25 lakh. Concurrently, the monthly salary for an executive director is Rs 2.16 lakh.

 

Who is the newly appointed RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra?

 

Sanjay Malhotra is an IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, belonging to the 1990 batch. He studied computer science engineering at IIT, Kanpur and earned a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University. Throughout a career that extends beyond 33 years, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise across multiple sectors including Power, Finance & Taxation, Information Technology, and Mining, among others. He currently holds the position of Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Before this, he held the position of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services at the Ministry of Finance.
