8th Pay Commission: The central government is currently facing significant pressure from employees advocating for the establishment of the Eighth Pay Commission in 2025. Reports indicate that the government is considering this request. Discussions among Union government ministers regarding the Eighth Pay Commission in the Rajya Sabha have gained considerable attention on social media.

Yet no official announcement

In response, the Finance Ministry has clarified that these reports are unfounded and that no official announcement has been made regarding the commission.

It could lead to benefits for numerous central government employees

Despite the lack of confirmation, previous discussions in the Rajya Sabha appear to support the interests of employees, suggesting a potential for the Eighth Pay Commission to be established within this year. There are indications that an announcement regarding the commission may be forthcoming. If this occurs, it could lead to benefits for numerous central government employees and pensioners.

According to official sources, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to address the Eighth Pay Commission in the upcoming Union Budget for 2025-2026. Additionally, employee unions have reportedly submitted a memorandum to the central government advocating for this initiative. Should the government proceed with the establishment of the Eighth Pay Commission this year, it is anticipated that there could be an increase in both employee salaries and pensions in 2026, with potential salary hikes reaching as high as 186 percent. The history of the Pay Commission reveals that a new commission has been established approximately every decade.

The inaugural Pay Commission was set up in 1946, and this pattern has continued with subsequent commissions introduced every ten years. The current Seventh Pay Commission has been in effect since January 2016, leading to the anticipation that the Eighth Pay Commission will commence on January 1, 2026. The Seventh Pay Commission was constituted in 2014, prior to its implementation. Consequently, while the Eighth Pay Commission is projected to start on January 1, 2026, it is essential to form the commission ahead of that date. In the meantime, there has been a significant update regarding the Eighth Pay Commission.
