8th Pay Commission: Central government employees and pensioners are currently awaiting the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission. The government has indicated in the Lok Sabha that a decision regarding the terms of reference and the timeline for the report’s submission will be made shortly.

According to the government, the Commission’s findings will benefit approximately 36.57 lakh civilian employees of the Central Government and 33.91 lakh pensioners and their families. Additionally, defense personnel and their pensioners will also gain from this initiative.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the Lok Sabha that the financial implications of the 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations will be assessed once the report is approved by the government. Input has been solicited from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel and Training, and various states regarding the Terms of Reference.

When the report will be ready to submit?

It was anticipated that the 8th Pay Commission’s report could be implemented by January 2026. However, the announcement regarding its formation, the criteria for member selection, and the terms of reference for determining salaries and pensions has yet to be made, raising concerns about the timeline.

Government can reveal the names of the commission’s members next month

A media report suggests that the government may reveal the names of the commission’s members next month. Historically, the last three commissions took between 2 to 5 months from the decision to form the commission to its actual establishment.

Furthermore, the report noted that previous commissions required over a year to submit their findings. Given the current lack of announced details, it appears challenging for the report to be implemented by the following year.
