In India, banks observe closures based on regional festivals, and today, Wednesday, they will be open nationwide except in one state. The only state where banks will be closed today is Tamil Nadu.
In Tamil Nadu, both government and private banks are closed in observance of Tiruvalluvar Day, which celebrates the birth anniversary of the esteemed poet and philosopher Tiruvalluvar. If you’re in Tamil Nadu, it’s best to handle your banking needs online today, as branch services will not be available.
Bank holidays are determined by region
Across the country, banks are closed every Sunday and on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Additionally, they observe national holidays and regional festivals, which can differ by zone. If a month has a fifth Saturday, banks will be open on that day.
These days, most banking transactions are conducted online or via mobile banking. However, certain tasks, like applying for a loan, require a visit to a bank branch. Therefore, if you plan to go to the bank, make sure to check the holiday schedule first.
1. In January, banks will be closed on the following dates:
2. On January 15, all government and private banks in Tamil Nadu will observe a holiday for Thiruvalluvar Day.
3. December 16 will see banks in Tamil Nadu closed in celebration of Uzhavar Thirunal.
4. Banks will not operate on January 19 as it falls on a Sunday.
5. In Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Agartala, banks will be closed on January 23 in honor of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti and Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti.
