Right to vote only to Indian citizens

According to Article 326 of the Constitution of India, the right to vote can be given only to a citizen of India, an Aadhaar card only establishes the identity of a person. Therefore, it was decided that EPIC will be linked with Aadhaar as per the provisions of Article 326 of the Constitution, Sections 23(4), 23(5), and 23(6) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the decision of the Supreme Court in WP (Civil) No. 177/2023. This move will make the election process even more secure and reliable.

Election Commission’s claim

The Election Commission had recently decided that it would issue new EPIC numbers to voter IDs with duplicate numbers within the next three months. The Election Commission had said that having a duplicate number does not mean a fake voter.

The main objective behind linking Aadhaar with EPIC is to remove the error in the voter list and clean it up. The Election Commission believes that this move will help in identifying fake voters. This will help clean up the voter list and make the election process even more accurate.

Fake voting will be curbed

Another reason for linking Aadhaar to voter ID is that it can curb fake voting. After the implementation of this system, the possibility of a person casting a vote at multiple places will be eliminated and the election process will become more transparent. This step will reduce fraud in the election process and increase people’s confidence.
