If you are a government employee, then this article is for you. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made UAN (Universal Account Number) activation mandatory for all its members. By November 30, 2024, new employees have to activate UAN through Aadhaar-based OTP. Later, all employees will have to complete this process. New Delhi: The Ministry of Labour and Employment has directed the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) to ensure that UAN of employees is activated to avail the benefits of the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme. EPFO had launched UAN on October 1, 2014. This gives every member a UAN. They can use it for EPFO benefits during their employment. EPFO has said that 18.81 lakh new members will be added to it in September 2024.
UAN activation has become necessary
According to the organization’s website, UAN activation is mandatory for employees to avail of EPFO’s online services. Therefore, it has requested all employers to get their employees’ UAN activation done through Aadhaar-based OTP. In the first phase, employers are required to complete the process of UAN activation through Aadhaar-based OTP for all their new employees. These are the employees who are joining the current financial year till November 30, 2024.
Going forward, the second phase will include state-of-the-art biometric authentication through face recognition technology in UAN activation. Therefore, it is necessary for employees to activate UAN to avail any EPFO service online.
What is UAN?
UAN is a 12-digit unique number assigned to every member of the EPFO. This number combines multiple member IDs allocated to the same member employee under one Universal Account Number. The UAN needs to be linked with the KYC details of the employee.

How do I activate UAN to avail EPFO services online?
The following information should be entered as per EPFO records while activating UAN.
Member’s UAN
Member’s Aadhaar number
Member Name
Date of Birth.
Members must have a valid mobile number linked to the Aadhaar number as per UIDAI records. The member’s Aadhaar number, name, and date of birth should be the same as on the member’s Aadhaar card. Follow the steps below to activate your UAN.
Step 1: Visit the EPF Member Portal and click on ‘Activate UAN’.
Step 2: Choose one of the following: UAN, Member ID, Aadhaar, or PAN.
Step 3: Fill in additional details such as name, date of birth, mobile number, and email ID and click on ‘Get Authorization PIN’.
Step 4: An authorization PIN will be sent to the mobile number registered with EPFO on behalf of the member.
Step 5: Enter this PIN and click on ‘Validate OTP and Activate UAN’.
Step 6: The UAN will be activated and the password will be sent to the member’s mobile. Now members can log in to Integrated Member using their UAN and password.
How do I know your UAN?
Step 1: Visit the EPFO Integrated Member Portal.
Step 2: Enter your mobile number registered in the EPFO records.
Step 3: Click on the ‘Get Authorization Pin’ option.
Step 4: A PIN will be sent to your mobile number registered with EPFO. Enter the PIN.
Step 5: Enter the required details, such as name and date of birth registered with EPFO, and select any one of Aadhaar, PAN, or Member ID and furnish the details. Then click on ‘Show my UAN.’
