Big news for vehicle owners. There’s been a lot of buzz in India lately about vehicle insurance. People are saying that if the government tweaks the Motor Vehicle Act, cars without insurance won’t even be able to get fuel. Plus, it could make getting a Fastag a hassle too.
Insurance Industry’s Suggestion
A good number of vehicles are still on the road without insurance. The insurance sector has proposed to the central government that petrol stations should deny fuel to uninsured vehicles. Right now, the government is mulling over this idea.
Insurance is a Must
According to the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, having insurance for all vehicles is a must, yet many folks still skip it. Driving without third-party insurance is illegal, and there are fines for those who don’t comply. If you have insurance, it helps cover damages if you get into an accident.
Strict Enforcement Ahead
Once the government rolls out these new rules, they’ll be enforced rigorously. Additionally, the Parliamentary Standing Committee has urged the government to boost insurance coverage and improve data integration along with e-challan systems.
The IRDA reports that of the estimated 350 to 400 million vehicles operating on Indian roads, over 50% lack third-party insurance coverage. Should the government heed the insurance sector’s recommendations, obtaining insurance could become a more streamlined process.
