The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a major update on the new Rs 2,000 note. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released data up to December 31, 2024, detailing the number of currency notes returned after demonetisation and those still in circulation. The report indicates that 98% of the Rs 2,000 notes have been deposited back into the bank, while Rs 6,691 crore worth of notes remain with the public and are actively circulating.

As of December 31, 2024, 98.12% of the Rs 2,000 notes issued by the RBI have been returned. Demonetisation occurred in May 2023, when there were 3.56 lakh crore notes in circulation, leaving only 6,691 crore still in the market.

The RBI has confirmed that the option to exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 notes is still available. As of October 7, 2023, all bank branches stopped accepting these notes, but individuals can still return them at 19 RBI offices. Starting from October 9, 2023, Rs 2,000 notes can be deposited at these locations.

Additionally, people have the option to send their notes back to the bank via India Post. Deposits can be made at RBI offices located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Apart from this, the general public can send 2000 rupees notes through post from any post office in the country to any issue office of RBI for depositing in their bank accounts.

Despite being withdrawn from circulation, Rs 2,000 notes continue to be legal tender. The RBI had introduced Rs 2,000 notes after the government removed Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes from circulation in November 2016.
