The government has announced an update for PAN Card holders ahead of 2025. A new technology-driven PAN card featuring a ‘Dynamic QR Code’ will be introduced. To clarify any confusion, the Finance Ministry stated that current PAN card holders will not need to apply for a new card, and there will be no changes to the existing Permanent Account Number.

The cabinet’s decision to implement this advanced PAN card system aims to streamline transactions for everyone, from everyday citizens to business owners. However, this has led to questions among the public about whether they need to obtain a new PAN card or if their old cards will be replaced. Additionally, some individuals are concerned about their old addresses being used for new card deliveries, especially if they have moved since their original application.

In light of these uncertainties, the Finance Ministry reassured that existing PAN card holders do not need to apply for a new card under the new system, and their Permanent Account Numbers will remain unchanged. If someone needs to update their name, address, email, or mobile number on their PAN, they can apply for a new card, but they will need to wait for the rollout of the updated PAN card system, referred to as ‘PAN 2.0’. In the meantime, individuals can make corrections online using their Aadhaar card, as PAN is linked to Aadhaar, simplifying the process.

1. Applications for updates can be submitted through https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserAddressUpdate.html or https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN_ONLINE/homeaddresschange.

2. There will be no charge for these applications. For any other corrections, an online application can be made for a nominal fee.

As per the Finance Ministry, individuals whose addresses have changed following the issuance of their PAN card also need not be concerned. No PAN card will be mailed to their previous address. If they do not rectify the name, address, etc., and request a new PAN card.

The average person’s inquiry is, what advantages will the QR code in the ‘Dynamic PAN Card’ provide? The Finance Ministry states that QR codes are not an exclusive topic. PAN cards that have been issued from the year 2017-18 onward feature a QR code. The updated system will feature a dynamic QR code that will display the updated information as well. Individuals possessing a PAN card that lacks a QR code may request a new card. This can be accomplished now or even following the introduction of ‘PAN 2.0.’

Possessing a QR code enables you to authenticate PAN and PAN card details, including photograph, signature, name, parent’s name, and date of birth. The central government stated that in Budget 2023, all business entities will be required to obtain PAN cards, according to traders and industrial organizations. Every business entity will be recognized by this permanent account number.
