The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has recently announced that employees are not required to activate the Universal Account Number (UAN) multiple times. The EPFO shared on its social media platforms regarding this and stated that employees do not need to create a new UAN following their previous employment. This indicates that if you have switched jobs, you do not require a new UAN.

What does UAN stand for?

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a distinct number given by the EPFO to each employee. It is a permanent number consisting of 12 digits, which stays constant during the employee’s tenure. The UAN does not change even if you switch jobs, and the new PF account is connected to it.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has recently directed the EPFO to enable the UAN for all employees as part of a campaign. According to the updated guidelines, the UAN for all new hires must be activated via an Aadhaar-based OTP method by November 30, 2024.

Is it required to activate UAN each time?

EPFO has stated that it is unnecessary to create a new UAN when leaving or changing employment. If an employee unintentionally possesses two UANs, the balance and service of the previous UAN can be transferred to the new UAN using the One Member One EPF Account feature.

How to activate UAN?

1. Go to the EPFO Member Portal.
2. Click on the “Activate UAN” link.
3. Fill in the UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth and mobile number linked to Aadhaar.
4. Receive the OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number and enter it.
5. After activation, the password will be sent to the registered mobile number.

Why is this necessary?

UAN activation allows employees to check PF balances, file claims online, and avail other digital services.
