Important decision possible on linking voter list with Aadhaar
The presence of UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar in this meeting is a big sign towards speeding up the process of linking the voter list with the Aadhaar database. At the same time, with the presence of Legislative Secretary Rajiv Mani, there is a possibility of discussing the necessary steps to remove the legal hurdles coming in this process.
After becoming the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar had promised to remove all the discrepancies in the voter list within three months. This meeting is being considered a big step in that direction.
Will the legal hurdles be removed
Linking the voter list with Aadhaar seems to be a perfect solution for the Election Commission, but the biggest hurdle in this is legal. In 2015, the Election Commission started this process and within three months, 30 crore voter ID cards were linked to Aadhaar. However, due to petitions challenging the legality of Aadhaar, the Supreme Court put a stay on it.
In 2018, the Supreme Court approved the validity of Aadhaar but limited it to voluntary use. After this, in 2022, the Central Government amended the Representation of the People Act and the Election Act to allow the linking of Aadhaar and voter ID, which was also upheld by the Supreme Court.
So far 66 crore voters linked to Aadhaar
At present, the process of linking voter ID card to Aadhaar on a voluntary basis is going on and so far 66 crore voters have been linked to this system. However, still 33 crore voters are not linked to Aadhaar and this remains the root of the controversy.
The Election Commission has indicated that it may approach the Supreme Court to make the voter list completely error-free. This issue is likely to be discussed in Tuesday’s meeting and important decisions are likely to be taken to remove legal hurdles.
What will be the impact
If the Election Commission successfully implements this process, it will stop fake voting and the electoral process will be more transparent. However, the opposition is apprehensive about this move and is calling it a conspiracy of the government. Now it will be interesting to see what results come out of this meeting and what steps the Election Commission takes to correct the voter list.
