The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) added 18.81 lakh members in September, which is 9.33 per cent more than the same month last year. This indicates an increase in jobs in the organized sector. According to EPFO data on employees with regular salaries (payroll), the organization added 9.47 lakh new members in September 2024, which is 6.22 per cent more than in September 2023. The increase in new membership can be signified by rising employment opportunities, greater awareness about employee benefits, and EPFO’s promotional programs.
9.33% More Members Join EPFO
The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) added 18.81 lakh members to its social security scheme in September 2024, marking a 9.33% increase compared to September 2023.
Majority of New Members Are Young
People aged 18 to 25 make up the largest group of new members, accounting for 59.95% of the total additions in September 2024. A total of 8.36 lakh members joined from this age group, showing a 9.14% increase from September 2023. This trend reflects that many young people are joining the organized workforce, particularly those starting their first jobs.
Higher Rejoining Rates
Approximately 14.10 lakh members exited and later rejoined EPFO in September 2024, representing an 18.19% increase compared to the previous year.
2.47 Lakh New Women Members Added
EPFO added 2.47 lakh new women members in September, marking a 9.11% increase from the previous year. The number of net female members grew by around 12%, totalling about 3.70 lahks.
Top States Contributing to Member Additions
The top five states/UTs contributed 59.86% (11.26 lakh) of the net member additions in September. Maharashtra led with 21.20% of the total additions. Other states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana each added over 5% of the net members.
