Big news for EPFO members. Over 76 million members of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) can now update their personal information, such as name and date of birth, online without needing employer verification or EPFO approval. This new feature was launched on Saturday.
Additionally, members with e-KYC EPF accounts linked to Aadhaar can submit their EPF transfer claims online using an Aadhaar OTP (One Time Password), eliminating the need for employer involvement.
This service is already in effect
Union Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya introduced these two new EPFO services on Saturday. He noted that approximately 27% of complaints from EPFO members are related to profile or KYC issues, and this new facility is expected to significantly reduce those complaints.
The Labor Minister mentioned that large employers with extensive workforces will also benefit from the ability to amend employee personal details. He highlighted that EPFO has streamlined the process for joint declarations on its portal, allowing employees to easily correct common errors in their personal information, including name, date of birth, gender, nationality, parent names, marital status, spouse’s name, and employment dates.
UAN must be issued before 2017. There’s no need for the employer to verify or for EPFO approval in these cases, and no supporting documents are necessary. This option is available for members whose UAN was issued after October 1, 2017, when linking with Aadhaar became mandatory.
For UANs issued before October 1, 2017, employers can make corrections without needing EPFO approval. The process for supporting documents has also been made easier. If the UAN is not linked to Aadhaar, any corrections must be submitted physically to the employer, who will then verify and send it to EPFO for approval.
This decision was made because UAN registration is initially handled by the employer. Many employees faced issues due to errors made by employers when entering details like the names of parents or spouses, marital status, nationality, and service information during or after registration. Previously, to correct these mistakes, employees had to submit an online request along with supporting documents, which required employer verification and EPFO approval. This was known as a joint declaration.
