New Fastag Rule: The rules regarding FASTag are constantly changing. Although FASTag is mandatory in all states, some states are offering exemptions. Now, the Maharashtra Cabinet has announced that from April 1, 2025, it will be mandatory for all vehicles in the state to have FASTag. A FASTag is issued for every vehicle, and almost all banks in India provide them. If you buy a car, you will also need to get a FASTag for it. Only then will you be able to drive your car.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is a small RFID tag that helps drivers pay tolls automatically. This tag is placed on the windscreen of the vehicle and is directly linked to the driver’s bank account. Whenever the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the toll fee is automatically deducted from the linked account. This system helps save time as the vehicle doesn’t need to stop at the toll booth.
Benefits of FASTag
FASTag offers several benefits for drivers:
- Convenience: You can use the FASTag at any toll plaza without stopping to pay.
- Time and Fuel Saving: Since vehicles don’t need to stop, it saves both time and fuel.
- Low Balance Consequences: If the balance in your linked account is low, the FASTag will be blacklisted. In such cases, the driver won’t be able to use the toll-free system.
Where Should FASTag Be Installed?
FASTag should be installed in a location where it can be easily read. The best place for this is on the front glass of the vehicle (windshield). This location ensures that the camera can easily scan the tag, and drivers don’t have to wait in line.
NHAI’s ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ Initiative
FASTag has become essential for simplifying toll payments and reducing congestion at toll plazas. However, upcoming changes will impact users significantly.
On April 1, 2024, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launched the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative. This aims to prevent the misuse of multiple FASTags for a single vehicle and ensure compliance with the mandatory KYC process, following reports of violations.
