Big news for vehicle owners. If you own a motorcycle or car that’s been around for 20 years, listen up! The government is rolling out a new plan aimed at older vehicles. This means you’ll need to shell out more cash to re-register your classic rides. The Ministry of Road Transport has put out a draft notification about it.
According to the Road Transport Ministry’s proposal, if your two-wheeler is over 20 years old, you’ll be looking at a fee of Rs 2000 to renew its registration. For cars that have hit the 20-year mark, the cost jumps to Rs 10,000, while three-wheelers will set you back Rs 5000.
Commercial vehicles aren’t getting a break either. The government is also targeting older commercial rides. The draft includes measures to reduce the number of medium and heavy commercial vehicles that are over 15 years old. If your medium vehicle is 15 years old, expect to pay Rs 12,000, and for heavy vehicles, it’s Rs 18,000. If you’re renewing after 20 years, those fees double—Rs 25,000 for medium and Rs 36,000 for heavy vehicles.
This draft will be enforced nationwide, but there’s an exception for Delhi-NCR. In that area, old vehicles are already facing restrictions due to pollution concerns, with a court ruling mandating the removal of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years.
Additionally, you might find that the costs for vehicle fitness tests are going up too. The ministry is proposing fees of Rs 1000 for vehicles aged 8 to 15 years, Rs 2000 for those older than 15 years, and between Rs 7000 to Rs 25000 for three-wheelers and heavy vehicles.
