The Central Government launched the Janani Suraksha Yojana to improve the health of pregnant women and newborns. This scheme is a safe motherhood program under the National Health Mission (NHM). Its primary objective is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by promoting institutional deliveries among poor pregnant women. Under this scheme, ₹6,000 is directly transferred to the bank account of a pregnant woman upon delivery. Additionally, all medical tests for pregnant women and the delivery process are provided free of cost under this scheme.
Nutritional Support for Mother and Child
This amount of ₹6,000 is provided to ensure adequate nutrition for the mother and child. Over one crore women benefit from the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) every year, with the government spending ₹1,600 crore annually on this initiative. JSY was launched on April 12, 2005.
Under JSY, pregnant women in rural areas receive ₹1,400, while women in urban areas receive ₹1,000. Additionally, under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, they are entitled to ₹5,000. Moreover, the scheme includes awareness messages about vaccinations for the mother and child for up to five years after delivery.
