Ladki Bahin Yojana: The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana may soon see the removal of certain women’s names from its beneficiary list. The state government is set to review the list to identify and eliminate those who do not meet the eligibility criteria for the scheme.
Review of the list
Following the Mahayuti coalition’s victory, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis indicated that a review of the list would take place. On Thursday, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare announced that the government would initiate this review promptly to ensure that ineligible individuals are removed.
Verification is essential
After a cabinet meeting, she stated, “The state government will commence the verification of the Ladki Behen beneficiary list. Orders regarding eligibility have already been issued.” The minister emphasized that this verification is essential to ensure that only women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with an annual family income below Rs 2.5 lakh, receive financial assistance under the scheme.
Collaboration with the Income Tax Department
The government plans to collaborate with the Income Tax Department for this verification process, which will help determine the income of applicants’ families. Women whose families own a four-wheeler, those who have relocated out of the state after marriage, or whose names and bank account details do not match their Aadhar card will be deemed ineligible. Such applicants will not qualify for the next payment.
The Mahayuti government introduced this scheme in June 2024, promising to provide Rs 1500 monthly to women from families earning less than Rs 2.5 lakh annually, with an increase to Rs 2100 anticipated after coming to power. Finance Minister Ajit Pawar had previously stated that the government would allocate Rs 46 thousand crore for 2.47 lakh beneficiaries.
