A new government taxi service, Sahakar Taxi, will soon be launched across the country. The Indian government is introducing this service as an alternative to Ola and Uber. This initiative will directly benefit drivers and will not add to the profits of big companies.
The app will allow users to book 2-wheeler, auto, and 4-wheeler taxis. The central government announced this project on March 27. Customers will receive improved services at affordable prices, and drivers will gain direct benefits.
What is this new service?
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has officially announced a new cooperative taxi service. He said, “The profit from this service will not go to big businessmen. Instead, it will directly benefit the drivers.” This means drivers will no longer have to pay the high commissions charged by apps like Ola and Uber.
Why was this taxi service launched?
Currently, private companies like Ola, Uber, and Rapido charge a high commission from drivers, ranging from 20% to 30%. As a result, drivers earn less, and passengers have to pay higher fares. To solve this problem, the central government is launching a taxi service where no private company will have control.
What are the benefits?
Through this service, passengers can book 2-wheelers, autos, and 4-wheeler taxis at lower fares. The taxis can be booked directly from a government app. Drivers will not have to pay any commission. The app will provide information in local languages and offer 24-hour service.
When will this service be launched?
The government has announced that the taxi service will be launched in the next few months. Amit Shah said that the registration of 2-wheelers, autos, and 4-wheeler taxis across the country will start soon. A new insurance company will also be formed to provide insurance coverage to drivers without the involvement of private companies.

Taxi services in other states
West Bengal has already launched a similar taxi service called Jatri Saathi, which operates in Kolkata, Siliguri, Asansol, and Durgapur. Kerala had also introduced an online taxi service called Kerala Sawari, but it was discontinued due to low demand. However, the Kerala government is now planning to relaunch it.

Can this service compete with Ola and Uber?
Since this service will be run by the government, drivers will earn better, and fares will be more controlled. Safe and reliable services will also be provided. However, to compete with big companies like Ola and Uber, the government must improve its software, infrastructure, and service quality. Now, we have to wait and see when this service is officially launched across the country.
