The government has officially announced an increase in the monthly pension for freedom fighters, participants in the Hindi Movement of 1957, and individuals who actively participated in the protests during the Emergency period. This increase will take effect from July 1, 2024. Chief Minister Naib Saini, in a heartfelt acknowledgment of the invaluable contributions made by these defenders of democracy, declared that their monthly pension will be doubled, reflecting the government’s commitment to honoring their sacrifices.
In addition to the pension increase, the government has also introduced a provision for free travel on ordinary Haryana Roadways buses for these esteemed individuals. This initiative aims to ease their mobility and ensure that they can travel without financial burden, recognizing their past struggles and contributions to society.
During his address, CM Saini emphasized the critical importance of remembering the arduous struggle to preserve democracy during the Emergency, a time marked by significant challenges and sacrifices. He highlighted that the government is dedicated to honoring the legacy of these satyagrahis, who stood firm in their beliefs and fought for the rights of the people. In recognition of their efforts, the Haryana government has initiated several programs designed to support and uplift these individuals.
Shubh Jyotsna Pension Scheme
One of the notable initiatives is the Haryana State Shubh Jyotsna Pension Scheme, which currently provides pensions to 501 democracy fighters and their widows. With the upcoming changes, starting July 1, 2024, the monthly pension for these individuals will see a substantial increase from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000. This doubling of the pension is a significant step towards ensuring that these heroes receive the financial support they deserve in their later years.
Moreover, the benefits extend beyond just financial assistance. The government has also made provisions for free travel on ordinary Haryana Roadways buses, allowing these fighters to travel without any cost. For those who prefer more comfortable travel options, a 75 percent discount on fares for Volvo buses will also be available, further enhancing their travel experience.

In addition to these measures, the Haryana government is committed to the health and well-being of these individuals. Under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, they will have access to free medical treatment, with coverage up to Rs 5 lakh.
