With the Centre approving the construction of an additional two crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), the survey will now be conducted based on updated norms. A fresh list of beneficiaries will be prepared, and a ‘self-survey’ option will be introduced for those wishing to enrol in the scheme for the first time.

‘Facial Recognition’ Technology to be Used for the First Time

According to a source in the Rural Development Ministry, ‘facial recognition’ technology will be used for the first time by both surveyors and the people being surveyed to ensure transparency. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) was launched in 2016 with a target of building 2.95 crore houses within five years.

What is PMAY-G?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) aims to provide affordable housing for rural families living in temporary homes. Launched in 2016, it offers ₹1.2–₹1.3 lakh to eligible beneficiaries for building pucca houses with essential facilities like toilets and electricity. Beneficiaries are selected through verified surveys, ensuring transparency with technology like geo-tagging and facial recognition.

PMAY-G Progress So Far

The Rural Development Ministry reports that 2.67 crore houses have been constructed under PMAY-G since its launch. Additionally, the construction of about 77 lakh houses pending under the Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana has been completed.

Relaxed Eligibility Criteria and New Surveys via ‘Awas Plus App’

This time, the eligibility criteria for the scheme have been relaxed, and some restrictions have been removed, according to an official source. New surveys will be conducted through the ‘Awas Plus App’.
