PM Surya Ghar Yojana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched this scheme in February 2024. This scheme aims to provide 300 units of free electricity every month by installing solar panels on the roofs of 1 crore houses by 2027. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is running this scheme, and power companies (DISCOMs) are helping to implement it. This is the world’s largest domestic solar program.

How will you benefit
This scheme will bring cheap electricity to your home. Solar panels will generate electricity from sunlight, which can save up to Rs 15,000-18,000 every year. The government will also provide subsidies for this, which is as follows:
- Rs 30,000 for 1 kilowatt (kW)
- Rs 60,000 for 2 kilowatt (kW)
- Rs 78,000 for 3 kilowatt (kW)
Apart from this, you will also get a cheap loan at an interest rate of about 7%. If your solar panel produces more electricity and you are unable to use it, then you can also earn money by selling it.
How to apply
Applying for the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is very easy. You just have to visit the national portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in). Follow the steps given here:
- Visit the portal and select your state and electricity company.
- Register by entering your consumer number, mobile number, and email ID.
- Login and fill out the application form.
- Your electricity company will inspect your form and approve it.
- Once approved, get solar panels installed from a registered vendor.
- Get a net meter installed, which will count the electricity units.
- After inspection, the subsidy will be credited to your bank account within 30 days.
Who can avail of the benefit
To avail this scheme, you must be a citizen of India. You must have your own house, and a roof, as solar panels will be installed on the roof.
