What the government has said?
The government announced, the updated regulations have been developed with the aim of ensuring ‘Postal Service Public Service’. Its aim is to clarify the language of the rule and promote the ideas of ‘minimal governance, efficient government’ and ‘self-sufficient India’.
Post Office act
The Department of Posts has begun legal reforms and prepared a new law called ‘Post Office Act, 2023’ in December of the previous year. This legislation went into effect in June of this year. The Post Office Regulations, 2024 have been created to facilitate the services offered by post offices. This involves creating new opportunities for the department and generating jobs through the services offered by the post office. It will concentrate on ensuring access to people-oriented services in remote locations through collaboration with both public and private organizations.
The statement notes that “In advancing this initiative, a fresh collection of subordinate laws, namely the Post Office Rules, 2024 and Post Office Regulations, 2024, have been formulated under the Post Office Act, 2023.” The Government of India has announced the subordinate laws via the official gazette, which have taken effect from December 16, 2024.
Effect will be nation wide
The statement indicated that these rules lack punitive measures. The Post Office Regulations, 2024 outline the specifics and operational details of the products and services provided by the post office nationwide, and they also incorporate provisions for insurance and financial services available through the post office network.
