Now, only Rs 6,839 crore worth of demonetized notes are in the hands of the people. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the demonetization of Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes on May 19 last year. The total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, was Rs 3.56 lakh crore, the central bank said in a statement. This amount came down to Rs 6,839 crore on November 29, 2024.

 

What did the RBI say?

 

“Thus, 98.08 percent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been returned,” the RBI said. The facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2,000 banknotes was available at all bank branches in the country till October 7, 2023. However, the facility to exchange these notes is still available at 19 issue offices of the RBI.

 

Since 9 October 2023, the issue offices of the RBI have been accepting Rs 2,000 banknotes from individuals and entities for depositing in their bank accounts. Apart from this, people can also send 2,000-rupee notes by India Post to any issue office of RBI within the country. This money is deposited in their bank account.

 

How can you exchange Rs 2,000 notes?

 

There are 19 RBI offices for deposit/exchange of bank notes at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. The Rs 2,000 notes were introduced after Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in November 2016.
