RBI New Note: Your currency notes are set to undergo another transformation. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced its intention to issue new 100 and 200 rupee notes.
Intention to issue new 100 and 200 rupee notes
On Tuesday, the RBI detailed the forthcoming changes associated with these denominations. Previously, the Reserve Bank had introduced new 500 rupee notes while discontinuing the old 1,000 rupee notes. The new 100 and 200 rupee notes will feature the signature of the newly appointed governor, Sanjay Malhotra.
Probable specifications of the new notes
Their design will closely resemble that of the current 100 and 200 rupee notes from the Mahatma Gandhi (New) series. It is important to note that all previously issued 100 and 200 rupee notes will continue to be recognized as legal tender and will not be withdrawn from circulation. Sanjay Malhotra assumed the role of RBI Governor in December 2024, succeeding Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure had been extended. Malhotra, a 1990 batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed for a term of three years.
New 50 rupee notes
The RBI has also announced the upcoming issuance of new 50 rupee notes, which will similarly bear the signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra and feature the image of Mahatma Gandhi from the new series. Enhanced security features will be incorporated into these notes to combat counterfeiting and address the rising issue of fake currency in the country. The Reserve Bank has recently confirmed that new notes of 50, 100, and 200 rupees will be released, all of which will include the signature of the new governor and improved security measures.
