Today’s article highlights a new initiative launched by the West Bengal government designed to support the state’s workers. This program offers a range of benefits, including financial aid, for both workers and their families. The initiative is called the Social Security Scheme.
What benefits does this scheme offer?
Monthly Benefit: Eligible participants will receive Rs 55 each month in their social security account, with contributions continuing based on the length of their participation. Additionally, individuals may be eligible for compensation of up to 2.5 lakh, depending on their duration in the scheme. Future increases in monthly contributions will also enhance the final payout.
Pension after five years
Employees who remain members of the scheme for a minimum of five years will qualify for a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 upon retirement, ensuring ongoing financial support.
Compensation for Death and Disability
General Death: Families will receive ₹50,000 in compensation.
Accidental Death: Compensation rises to ₹2 lakh.
Disability: Compensation amounts can range from ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh, depending on the injury’s severity.
No cost to employees
Participation in this scheme is entirely free for employees, as the government will cover all associated costs. Employees are not required to contribute financially to join.
What are the eligibility criteria?
1. Employees must be aged between 18 and 60 years.
2. A minimum of 90 days of construction work must have been completed.
3. The scheme is available to workers across various sectors, including road and building construction, railways, flood control, irrigation, drainage, telephone tower construction, and water supply systems.
