Big news for middle class people. Rooftop installations are moving quickly under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the initiative has already surpassed 10 lakh installations by March 10, 2025, with solar plants set up in 10.09 lakh homes.
The goal of this government program is to provide free electricity to 1 crore households through solar energy. This will help lessen reliance on conventional energy sources, cut down carbon emissions, and promote a cleaner environment. So far, there have been 47.3 lakh applications for solar plant installations under this scheme.
Out of these applications, 6.13 lakh beneficiaries have already received a subsidy totaling Rs 4,770 crore. You can apply for this program by visiting the portal www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is overseeing the scheme, with support from power companies (DISCOMs) for its implementation.
You can get a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 under this initiative. The solar panels will generate electricity, providing affordable power to homes. The government offers subsidies for rooftop solar panel installations: Rs 30,000 for 1 kilowatt, Rs 60,000 for 2 kilowatts, and Rs 78,000 for 3 kilowatts. As for installation costs, expect to pay around Rs 90,000 for 1 kilowatt, about Rs 1.5 lakh for 2 kilowatts, and up to Rs 2 lakh for 3 kilowatts.
The government subsidy helps lighten the load of installing solar panels a bit. Plus, you can snag a low-interest loan at around 7% to help with the installation costs. If your solar panel generates more electricity than you can use, you can even make some cash by selling the extra power.
Applying is super simple:
1. Head over to pmsuryaghar.gov.in, choose your state, and pick your electricity provider.
2. Enter your consumer number, mobile number, and email to register.
3. Log in, fill out the application form, and hit submit.
4. After you apply, the electricity company will come by to inspect your place, and the next steps will kick off once you get the green light.
5. You’ll need to get your solar panels installed by a registered vendor.
6. Don’t forget, a net meter also needs to be set up.
7. Once the Discom inspects everything, a commissioning certificate will be generated on the portal.
8. After you get the commissioning report, submit your bank account info and a canceled check through the portal.
9. You can expect the subsidy amount to hit your bank account within 30 days.
