There are many schemes underway to help the citizens of the country. With their help, the needy are also provided with assistance and free food grains. It has been informed by the Department of Food & Public Distribution that PMGKAY has achieved great success in the year 2024.

PMGKAY deadline extended

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure food security of economically vulnerable families. Under this scheme, food grains are provided free of cost to the needy families.

Union minister Anurag Thakur has informed that this scheme has been extended for the next 5 years. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The scheme provides additional free food grains to the card holders. Under this scheme, 800 million Indians will be given free food grains for the next 5 years.

The announcement highlighted that all ration cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) have been fully digitized throughout India, which has improved transparency and efficiency in the distribution of subsidized food grains.

Additionally, the release mentioned significant accomplishments such as the Credit Guarantee Scheme, which has enabled greater post-harvest lending against electronic Negotiable Warehouse Receipts (e-NWRs), thereby boosting farmers’ incomes. Furthermore, the optimization of food grain distribution routes has resulted in savings of foreign exchange and a reduction in CO2 emissions.
