There is a big update on retirement age. Has the government really increased the retirement age of central employees to 62 years? A post claiming that the Union Cabinet has approved raising the retirement age of central government employees to 62 years has gone viral on social media. The viral post reads, “The Government of India has taken a big decision to increase the retirement age of central employees by 2 years. This decision will benefit lakhs of government employees, and they will now be able to work till the age of 62 years. This step has been taken in the interest of the employees so that they can serve for more time and the benefit of their experience can be given to the country.

What’s in the viral post?

This decision will not only benefit the employees but also the government. The experience of experienced employees will improve administration, and the cost of training new employees will also be reduced. Also, the expenditure on pension will also be reduced, as the employees will start taking pension after 2 years. The government was considering this proposal for a long time, and now it has been approved in the cabinet meeting. This decision will come into effect on 1 April 2025. This means that all central employees retiring after April 1, 2025, will get the benefit.

FAKE this post

However, there is no truth to this viral post, and no notification has been issued by the government regarding the increase in age. That is, there is no reality of this post going viral, and it is fake news. The Press Information Bureau of the Government of India (PIB) fact-checked this viral post and said that this message is absolutely misleading. The PIB said that the government has not increased the retirement age of central government employees to 62.

PIB claimed, “Reports going viral on social media claim that the Government of India has decided to increase the retirement age of central government employees by 2 years. The claim is fake, and no such decision has been taken by the Government of India. Don’t share news without verifying it.”

The claim made in the post is false

The PIB said that the government has not taken any such decision to increase the retirement age of central government employees. Further, in August 2023, the government confirmed in the Lok Sabha that there is no proposal under consideration to change the retirement age of central government employees. Therefore, the claim made in the post is false.
