Govt gives big information about PM Jan Dhan Yojana. The government said on Tuesday that out of the total 54.03 crore accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, 11.30 crore accounts are inactive, in which an amount of Rs 14, 750.27 crore is remaining. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. He said that the number of inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts was 39.62 percent in the year 2017, but due to the efforts of the government, it decreased to 20.91 percent in November 24.
Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Mallikarjun Kharge had sought state-wise information from the government on the number of Jan Dhan accounts opened since the launch of the scheme and the number of accounts currently classified as inactive. In response, Choudhary said, “Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, till November 20, 2024, a total of 54.3 crore accounts have been opened. Out of these, 11.30 crore accounts are inactive accounts.”
According to the state-wise data given by the Union Minister, the maximum number of accounts, around 9.63 crore, have been opened in Uttar Pradesh and out of these, around 2.34 crore accounts are inactive. Similarly, the number of accounts opened in West Bengal is 5.25 crore and the number of inactive accounts is 78.5 lakh.
According to the data given by Pankaj Chaudhary, the total balance in inactive accounts is Rs 14,750.27 crore. He told that as per the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India, those savings and current accounts are considered inactive in which no transaction has been done by the customer for more than two years.
Pankaj Chaudhary said that apart from this, banks have been advised to reduce the number of inactive accounts and make the process of making such accounts active and seamless and simple. He said, “As a result, the percentage of inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts has come down from 39.62 percent in March 17 to 20.91 percent in November 24.”
