UPI: As per the recent directive from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI services associated with inactive or reassigned mobile numbers will be suspended starting April 1. NPCI has mandated that banks and payment service providers (PSPs) must update their mobile number records weekly using the Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL) to prevent inactive or reassigned numbers from being linked to UPI accounts.

UPI users are urged to verify that their registered mobile numbers are active prior to the discontinuation of the service. Inactive mobile numbers linked to UPI accounts present a security threat. When users change or deactivate their numbers, their UPI accounts may remain active, exposing them to potential misuse. Additionally, if a mobile number is reassigned to a new user, there is a risk of UPI transactions being misdirected, which could result in funds being transferred to the wrong account and may facilitate fraudulent activities.

To mitigate these security concerns, NPCI has instructed banks and payment service providers to utilize the Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL) available on the Department of Telecommunications’ Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to identify and remove inactive mobile numbers from their records.

The following individuals will be impacted:

– Users whose inactive mobile numbers have not been utilized for calls, SMS, or banking notifications for an extended period.

– Users who have relinquished their number without updating their banking information.

– Users whose previous number has been reassigned to another individual.
