Road travel in India has always been an exciting and unique experience. Many people also use their cars for travel. If you travel by your vehicle on toll plaza roads, you will likely use a FASTag. However, many people may not be aware of the rules for using it. In recent years, toll plaza roads have developed rapidly across the country, making travel more convenient and faster. Travelling on toll plaza roads offers both advantages and challenges.
Importance of Toll Plazas
The primary purpose of toll plazas is to collect funds for road construction and maintenance. This helps ensure that roads remain in good condition. Toll roads provide travellers with safer and more efficient highways compared to other roads.
When travelling on toll roads with your vehicle, you must use FASTag. It’s a crucial tool for paying tolls. While many are aware that FASTag is necessary for toll deduction, some may not be familiar with the rules that can help avoid unnecessary toll payments and ensure you don’t pay more than necessary. Let’s take a look at these rules.
10-Second Rule
Recently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) introduced an important guideline regarding waiting times at toll booths. According to this rule, if a vehicle is stuck in the toll booth queue for more than 10 seconds, it should be allowed to pass without paying the toll.

100-Meter Rule
In addition to the 10-second rule, there is another important guideline you should know about—the 100-meter waiting line rule. According to NHAI, the waiting line at any toll plaza should not exceed 100 meters. If the queue is longer than 100 meters, toll tax cannot be collected from the vehicles waiting in line.
To identify the 100-meter waiting line, look for the yellow line markers at each toll lane. This marker ensures accountability among toll plaza operators.
What to Do if These Rules Are Violated
If you find yourself in a situation where these rules are not being followed, you have the right to take action. If a toll employee is misbehaving or preventing you from passing despite the violation, you can file a complaint by calling the toll-free number 1033.
