India has made a distinct identity in the whole world in terms of digital payment. But, a big challenge with this is to control fraud. New steps are being taken continuously by the government as part of the campaign to stop cyber fraud. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the organization that operates the system of retail transactions through UPI in India, keeps changing the rules from time to time.

Your UPI Account Could Be Deleted

Recently there were reports that NPCI is going to make some big changes. It was told in these that talks are being held with banks to ban ‘Pull Transactions’ because most of the digital frauds happen through this. Along with this, there is news of a big change regarding mobile numbers as well.

Change is going to happen from April 1

According to a report published in the newspaper Economic Times, from April 1, 2025, mobile phone numbers linked to UPI that are inactive or deactivated will be removed from the account. These are such numbers which are not used for a long time.

Also, instructions have been given to unlink recycled numbers from UPI. These are the numbers that mobile phone companies can give to another customer after 90 days of disconnection.

Generally, if no call or text is made from a number for three months or data is not used, then the telecom company deactivates it.

UPI apps will not work

After these numbers are delinked from UPI, apps like UPI, Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm will stop working on mobile phones. NPCI has instructed all UPI service providers and banks to identify and remove inactive mobile numbers by March 31, 2025.

No UPI Access After April 1

In such a situation, if a person has linked a phone number to his bank account or UPI which has not been active for a long time, then to continue using the UPI facility, he should either activate that number or link a new number to the account.

Increase in the number of UPI transactions

The number of UPI transactions in India is continuously increasing in February. In February this year, their number crossed 16 billion. In the year 2024, the number of UPI transactions increased by 46 percent compared to last year to 172.2 billion.
