Bengal Weather Update: The weather forecast from the department turned out to be spot on. Since Thursday morning, Kolkata has been blanketed by heavy clouds. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected to hit Kolkata and South Bengal all day long, with a chance of hail in some areas. North Bengal is also looking at scattered thunderstorms.

A rain warning with thunder and lightning has been issued for several districts in South Bengal until Sunday. Alipore has indicated that thunderstorms could affect all southern regions, including Kolkata, on Thursday, with potential hailstorms in certain spots. Alongside the rain, strong winds reaching 40 to 50 km/h are anticipated in Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, East and West Burdwan, and Hooghly, prompting an orange alert for those areas.

In Kolkata, East Midnapore, and South 24 Parganas, wind speeds are expected to be around 30 to 40 km/h. Thunderstorms with lightning are predicted across all districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, until Sunday. However, Alipore has mentioned that a change in weather is expected starting Monday.

Kolkata has been shrouded in thick black clouds since Thursday morning, and the city might see some light to moderate rain throughout the day, accompanied by gusty winds. The minimum temperature recorded in Kolkata on Thursday was 23.4 degrees Celsius, which is 4.2 degrees above normal, while the maximum is expected to hover around 30 degrees.

According to the IMD, from February 22 to 23, 2025, there’s a good chance of thunderstorms and storms hitting North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly, West Midnapore, Jhargram, East and West Burdwan, and Birbhum. Most of South Bengal, including Kolkata, can expect light to moderate rainfall.

In the northern districts, light rain is expected in Darjeeling and Kalimpong on Wednesday, with some snowfall in Darjeeling. Rain might also kick in for Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and nearby areas starting Thursday. Thunderstorms and storms are on the horizon for Saturday and Sunday.
